The IR Report April 4th

In this week’s edition of the IR Report, Jonathan Toews, Daniel Briere, Tyler Myers, Carey Price and a new injury term: Maintenance Day-to-Maintenance Day

New Additions

Daniel Briere, Philadelphia Flyers – Back – Indefinitely
In a rivalry game between two teams destined to face each other in the first round of the playoffs it got a little chippy. Pittsburgh’s Joe Vitale delivered a late big hit on Briere that resulted in an upper back injury. With only 1:03 remaining in a 6 – 3 game, Briere suggests Vitale was sent by Penguin’s Coach Dan Bylsma to injure someone. “Everybody knows the intent, what the intent was. Was it a bad hit? No. It was a clean hit. But obviously, you knew what he was doing. He was obviously trying to hurt me. We all know that.” Briere said to Philly.com. The NHL will want to avoid a New Orleans Saints bounty scenario in this series.

Jeff Carter, Los Angeles Kings – Ankle – Day-to-Day
Carter has a deep bone bruise in his ankle. While listed as day-to-day, it is doubtful he will return for regular season games. Carter has suffered an injury plagued season with shoulder, foot and ankle injuries.

Jacob Josefson, New Jersey Devils – Wrist Fracture – Week-to-Week
This is Josefson’s second bone fracture this season after having returned from a broken clavicle that cost him 36 games. Expect this injury to cost Josefson the entire first round. Should the Devils advance he may be ready to return for duty in the second round.

Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens – Head – Day-to-Day
The Calgary Herald is reporting that Price may have a concussion. Price collided with a teammate in practice on Thursday, but played Friday in New York. He has since developed headaches; otherwise know as concussion like symptoms. With nothing left to play for this season, don't expect to see Price play again this season.

Tyler Myers, Buffalo Sabres – Foot – Day-to-Day
Myers did not play on Tuesday in the team rally win over the Leafs, but a return in the final two regular season games is a possibility. With Ehrhoff already out indefinitely, Myers is invaluable to the Sabres chances of making the playoffs.

Mikhail Grabovski, Toronto Maple Leafs – Leg Laceration – Day-to-Day
Grabovski was cut on the leg by a skate blade on Saturday. It was a deep cut but did not cut any muscle. Head Coach Randy Carlyle suggests that Grabovski could return for Saturday’s season finale in Montreal.

James Reimer, Toronto Maple Leafs – Upper Body Injury – Day-to-Day

Lance Hornby Suggests that Reimer’s season is over given the fact there is only two games remaining and Reimer is still not skating. No word on the nature of this injury, perhaps a call to his mother may shed some light!

Nicklas Grossman, Philadelphia Flyers – Lower Body Injury – Day-to-Day
The latest Flyers defenseman injured is expected to only be out seven to ten games. He should be ready to play in the first round, if not the first game of the playoffs.

Slightly Banged up and Day-to-Day
The Bruins – Penguins game Tuesday saw both Steve Sullivan, and Johnny Boychuk leave early with lower body injuries. New Jersey Devils will play Wednesday night without David Clarkson due to a lower body injury. Andrew Brunette Skipped an optional practice on Tuesday with a LBI. Colorado’s Jamie McGinn has a sore back and is day-to-day.

Updates

Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks – Concussion – Day-to-Day
Captain Serious has been cleared to play, and the decision to play as soon as Thursday is his to make reports the Chicago Sun Times. After missing the last 20 games, Coach Joel Quennville said "It's up to him. He's progressing enough that he'll make that call."

Tomas Vokun, Washington Capitals – Groin – Day-to-Day

Vokun was not on the ice for morning practice on Wednesday. Vokun aggravated his injured groin on March 29th in Boston and is very unlikely to return during the regular season push for the Cap’s.

Kevin Bieksa, Vancouver Canucks – Maintenance – Maintenance Day-to-Maintenance Day

Bieksa did not dress for the Colorado game on March 28th and has not played since. He missed the game for “Maintenance”. Bieksa told the Vancouver Sun he would not play Tuesday saying "Today is obviously a maintenance day. I'm going to take it one maintenance day at a time." Obviously there is an injury there but the team is very tight lipped about it.

Back in Action
Nicklas Backstrom
finally made his return from concussion to the Washington lineup just in time to help the playoff push. Kris Letang only missed three games with a LBI. Flyers starting goalie Ilya Bryzgalov returned from a foot injury that cost him to miss three games. Nathan Gerbe sat nine games with an UBI and returns to help the Sabres fight for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
